June 2024 Trigger point massage on the horse - The goal of trigger point massage is to find muscular tension and eliminate it with manual technique, thus promoting mobility and improving the horse's well-being. We will discuss each muscle and its course, what it does and the problems it can cause. All trigger points and their location will be discussed and practically tested and treated on the horse. Stretching exercises will also be explained, which can be used to supplement trigger point treatment. The stress point massage is a recognized method to improve the health condition of the athlete horse in today's performance demands in all sports and to enable the horse to perform more effectively. Trigger point massage is useful for: - Stiffness in gait - Problems in the contact - short-stepping - girth and saddle tightness - stiff back beat errors - ...and some more. There are about 25 points or areas, which can be treated by specific trigger point massage, whereby the blood circulation is improved, cramped and agglutinated muscle fibers are loosened and thus can fulfill their function again. Thus, one achieves better mobility and a reduction of pain. Direct pressure on the stress points as a so-called deep massage produces a significant and long-lasting increase in blood circulation. In addition, histamine and acetylcholine are released. This contributes to the fact that the improved blood circulation lasts for a long time. Active stress points are areas that trigger pain reactions when the appropriate pressure is applied. The horses show their discomfort by simple evasion, skin trembling to violent defensive reactions. However, there are also points that many horses visibly enjoy being treated, e.g. by yawning, chewing or even breathing deeply in and out.
